The proper use of good and well in writing is a common grammatical topic; we last addressed it in September For many, the distinction can be uncertain. An equally slippery subject is whether to hyphenate well when it helps describe a noun.

S susanm Member. Hi, This is my understanding so far: 1. Words that use two adjectives eg family-owned business then we would use a hyphen. Words with two nouns used in an adjectival sense -- we will use a hyphen unless through usage the meaning is clearly understood such as stock market capitalisation.

For words that are an adverb plus either an adjective or noun then no hyphenation eg traditionally made models or least invasive procedures. There are some exceptions with short adverbs such as the word well. Would this be a correct understanding of the current approach? However, I don't know what it should be with high quality products and high priced prices.

But can it also be an adverb or a noun? Warmest regards, SusanM. Original Post. RM Rachel, Moderator Member. Your understanding is basically correct. The most logical use for hyphens is to prevent ambiguity.

For this reason, "high-quality" needs a hyphen when used as an adjective, as in "high-quality products". Without it, the phrase could possibly be misunderstood as "high quality-products.

It would seem to me that without the hyphen, both "ideal" and "radiant" could be modifying "cut diamond," but apparently this is not the case. The phrases "ideal cut" and "radiant cut" must be fixed in the diamond industry, so perhaps that is why they appear without the hyphen. The word is entered as an adjective only.

Then, in Wordnet, "manmade" also appears as one word without a hyphen. In some cases, a phrase may appear with or without a hyphen, often without a hyphen if the phrase is fixed, as in "stock market capitalization. Another characteristic of the hyphen is that it has disappeared from some words and will continue to disappear as the two parts of the hyphenated structure merge in people's minds.

Do not hyphenate compounds preceding or following a noun where the hyphen would be placed after a word ending in ly : highly regarded student; ridiculously long take-home exam; beautifully framed painting. When a number and unit of measurement are used adjectivally, they should be hyphenated: inch rule; nineteenth-century painter. Hyphenate compounds that use all whether they precede or follow the noun. I once thought my parents to be all-knowing and all-seeing. Hers is an all-encompassing compassion; she serves without thought of praise or other reward.

Hyphenation is like kitchen spice: use them correctly, and they can sharpen writing and give it a better texture. When used incorrectly or overused, they can garble the piece and make it difficult to read. Hyphen errors in a written piece are usually only distracting, but they can detract from clarity, whether by wrong placement or omission.

Hyphens can be tricky little things. The first place to look for answers on hyphenation is any dictionary. My favourite is the Macquarie Dictionary online. I keep the box checked at all times.

Fifty years ago, we were just beginning to learn some important lessons from natural disasters, epidemics, and manmade tragedies. The official language deployed in natural and manmade disasters can often be formulaic and confusing.

For the most current guidelines, see the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 7th ed. In a temporary compound that is used as an adjective before a noun, use a hyphen if the term can be misread or if the term expresses a single thought i. Most compound adjective rules are applicable only when the compound adjective precedes the term it modifies. If a compound adjective follows the term, do not use a hyphen, because relationships are sufficiently clear without one. When two or more compound modifiers have a common base, this base is sometimes omitted in all except the last modifier, but the hyphens are retained. See the Publication Manual for exceptions to these principles. When do you need to use a hyphen for compound words?

The use of hyphens is called hyphenation. As an orthographic concept, the hyphen is a single entity. In terms of character encoding and display, that entity is represented by any of several characters and glyphs including hard hyphens , soft or optional hyphens , and nonbreaking hyphens , depending on the context of use discussed below. Although hyphens are not to be confused with en dashes and minus signs, there are some overlaps in usage in which either a hyphen or an en dash may be acceptable, depending on user preference; discussed below and in character encoding which often uses the same character, called a " hyphen-minus ", to represent both the hyphen and the minus sign entities; discussed below.
