Not leadership. Nearly three years after the start of "The Great Recession," there's still no end in sight. The real figures include people who have given up looking or are no longer on unemployment insurance -- they aren't counted. A lot of reasons are cited. Each of these is important. But none of them is the most critical factor.

The single most important reason is that we have a management issue. The United States along with many other Western countries as well has too many leaders. In fact, I believe that we're probably "over-led. What we do need are more people at the top who actually understand how to do things themselves.

These are the new power players -- men and women who can manage and, at the same time, show others how to get stuff done. What do managers do? One good answer to this question comes from the late Peter Drucker, whose name that stands out above all others in the century-long history of management studies. A native of Vienna, Austria, Mr. Drucker was an intellectual who worked as a journalist and studied economics. The manager sets goals for the group, and decides what work needs to be done to meet those goals. The manager divides the work into manageable activities, and selects people to accomplish the tasks that need to be done. The manager creates a team out of his people, through decisions on pay, placement, promotion, and through his communications with the team. The manager establishes appropriate targets and yardsticks, and analyzes, appraises and interprets performance.

After all, your purpose as a manager — your mission — is to make it easier for your direct reports to get their work done. You clear obstacles out of their way. You fight political battles so they can focus on their work. You lead them.

That being said, strong managers are one of the most critical components of Employee Success — after all, employees leave managers, not companies. To do this, provide the tools to be successful instead of expecting managers to be successful.
